M.Phil COURSE IN AREA STUDIES-KARNATAKA STUDIES

ELIGILIBILTY CRITERIA:

Being an interdisciplinary subject, the board approved the following criteria for admissions into M.Phil in Area Studies-Karnataka Studies.

Candidates who have passed their post-graduate examination with at least 55 percent ( 50 per cent in the case of SC/ST/CAT-I Candidates) of marks or equivalent grade in the cognate subjects of Economics/ Political Science/ Journalism and mass communication/Social Work/ Sociology/ Development Studies from the University of Mysore or any other recognised University are eligible.

The candidate can choose on paper for each of the soft core papers.

ASSESSMENT PATTERN

The board approved the following pattern for evaluation.

I Semester
Total marks for each paper = 100 Marks

(C1) = 15 to be awarded based on Seminar = 10 Marks, Assignment = 5 Marks

(C2) = 15 Marks to be awarded based on Case Study

II Semester
Total Marks for Dissertation = 300

(C1) = 30 to be awarded based on a comprehensive review of literature on the selected topic

(C2) = 30 Marks to be awarded based on
Preparation of concept paper = 15 Marks and
Presentation of concept and analytical framework of the selected research work = 15 Marks

I. Community Development

I. Community Development in Karnataka: programmes and schemes of community Development. Urban community Development; The Existing urban development programmes in Karnataka, A critical review of urban development with reference to town planning, slum clearance and improvement, integrated Development of small and medium towns (IDSMT).

II. Problems and prospects of urban life: with reference to population density, noise, air, solid and liquid pollution. Policies and programmes for urban development with special reference to municipalities, corporations, metropolitan developmental authorities. Constitution 72rd amendment with reference to urban community development.

III. Rural development in Karnataka - Origin and background - early experiments. Approaches to rural development; Problems and prospects of rural life with reference to agriculture and allied actives like land and its use, animal husbandry housing, health and education. Rural backwardness- causes and the need for planned change. Rural poverty -causes, consequences, measurement .

IV. Five year plans and major rural development programs- Panchayat Raj Institutions Programs(MNERGP,SGSY). The role of NGO, CSR, co-operatives and rural banks, NABARD, District Rural Development Agency in rural karnataka development.

V. Problems of the tribal Communities - land alienation, poverty, indebtedness, low literacy, poor educational facilities, unemployment, underemployment, health and nutrition. Tribal welfare Meaning, concept, characteristics, problems of tribal community, change in tribal community, tribal development and its approaches, various existing schemes and programmes for the tribal welfare, legislative and constitutional provisions for the tribal. Programme planning and development. Role of N.G.O.s and CSR in tribal development.
